New Delhi: Spinal pain, a discomfort many tend to dismiss as a routine ache, can sometimes be a warning signal of more profound health issues, say medical experts.
While occasional back strain might seem harmless, persistent or recurrent pain deserves careful attention, especially if accompanied by other symptoms such as stiffness in the neck or lower back, numbness or tingling in the limbs, weakness, or difficulty in walking and everyday movements.
According to orthopaedics specialist Dr Bhavuk Garg, ongoing discomfort in the spinal column could point to several underlying conditions beyond simple muscle strain. One of the most common causes is a slipped disc, where the soft cushion between vertebrae pushes out and presses on nerves, causing intense pain and restricted movement. Conditions like spondylitis — inflammation of the spine — include cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) spondylosis, which also lead to chronic spinal pain.
Osteoporosis, which weakens bones, and nerve‑related issues or old injuries may further aggravate symptoms.
Experts warn that patients often attribute repeated spinal pain to posture or fatigue, ignoring signs that may signal serious diseases. Persistent discomfort while sitting, standing, or bending, especially when paired with limb symptoms or mobility problems, should prompt medical evaluation to rule out serious conditions.
Preventive measures can significantly help maintain spine health. Specialists recommend adopting correct posture while sitting and working, taking breaks from long periods of inactivity, and incorporating stretching, light exercise, yoga, and regular walking into daily routines. Avoiding heavy lifting and choosing supportive mattresses also contribute to reducing strain on the spine.
Ultimately, early diagnosis and prompt treatment remain key — self‑medication isn’t advised. Consulting a healthcare professional when pain persists can help identify the root cause and prevent long‑term complications.
