Dhaka: In a significant breakthrough in the chilling lynching case that shocked Bangladesh, four accused have confessed their involvement in the mob killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old Hindu garment worker.

The confessions were recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code before Senior Judicial Magistrate Tahmina Akhtar Tomar at Mymensingh Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday.

The accused — Tarik Hussain (19), Manik Mia (20), Nizamul Haq (20), and Ajmal Chaghir (26)— all employees of Pioneer Knitwear (BD) Limited in Habirbari Union, Duplyapara area, admitted to participating in the attack. Dipu was allegedly beaten to death on December 18 around 9 pm in the Square Master Bari Dubalia Para area of Bhaluka upazila, Mymensingh, over accusations of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet during a factory event. His body was tied to a tree and set ablaze.

Mymensingh Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) Abdullah Al Mamun clarified that the incident was not a pre-planned conspiracy but appeared orchestrated, with the accused naming other indirect participants. Police have withheld key details to aid the ongoing probe. Three days’ remand was granted for six others, who were to be taken into custody on Friday.

The case has heightened concerns over violence against minorities amid reports of no evidence substantiating the blasphemy claims. Investigations continue as authorities vow strict action.
