New Delhi: In a landmark achievement for Indian sports, Ahmedabad has been selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking India’s return to the prestigious multi-sport event after the successful 2010 Delhi edition.

The announcement, made by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on Wednesday, positions Gujarat’s vibrant capital as the stage for a global spectacle, with India eyeing the event as a stepping stone to its 2036 Olympic bid.

Following extensive deliberations, Ahmedabad’s world-class infrastructure, including the Narendra Modi Stadium and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, significantly influenced the decision. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya hailed the move as a “proud moment”, emphasising India’s commitment to a sustainable, inclusive Games. The event is expected to feature 20 sports, with wrestling and kabaddi likely to draw massive local support.

CGF President Louise Martin praised India’s vision for a “compact, athlete-centric Games”, with venues concentrated in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar to minimise costs. The Games, slated for July 2030, are projected to attract over 6,000 athletes from 74 nations, boosting tourism and local economies. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel assured “unparalleled hospitality”, promising eco-friendly facilities and cultural showcases.

The announcement has sparked nationwide excitement, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling it a “catalyst for India’s global sporting ambitions.” As preparations begin, the focus is on leveraging the Games to strengthen India’s Olympic bid, with Ahmedabad emerging as a potential host city for 2036.
