New Delhi: As the joyous season of Diwali approaches, a pall of fear has descended upon Delhi-NCR with intelligence agencies issuing a high alert for potential terrorist attacks.

The warning, triggered by recent global incidents and the aftermath of ‘Operation Sindoor,’ has put major cities on edge, urging citizens to stay vigilant amid the festive cheer.

The Intelligence Bureau has flagged crowded markets, malls, religious sites, and spots frequented by foreign tourists as high-risk zones. Officials emphasize the need for extra caution in bustling areas where celebration are expected to reach their peak. “Festivals bring happiness, but this year they have increased our security concerns,” a senior officer noted, emphasising the urgency to prevent any mishap.

In Punjab, the threat looms larger with reports of heightened activity by Khalistani outfits, allegedly backed by Pakistan’s ISI. Security sources suspect plots involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) targeting police stations and outposts. Adding to the worries, terror networks are now exploiting social media in novel ways. Fake accounts run from Pakistan and Bangladesh are spreading religious provocations and rumours to sow discord and chaos during the holidays.

Delhi Police has ramped up measures, deploying plainclothes officers across markets, metro stations, railway hubs, bus terminals, and temples. Joint checkings with neighbouring states along borders are intensified, while cyber cells monitor suspicious online activities round-the-clock.

In a direct appeal to the public, authorities urge reporting any dubious person, vehicle, or object immediately. They also advise verifying tenants and domestic help promptly. “This is no time for complacency; vigilance is key,” the police said, instructing stations to remain active at the beat level.
