Mumbai: Bollywood sensation Aamir Khan has declared his much-awaited dream film, an adaptation of The ancient Indian epic Mahabharata, will be brought to the cinematic screen. The actor-producer has declared that he will commence work in August 2025, embarking on a multi-part cinematic saga. According to Khan, the story resonates deeply with him (The Indian Express). It’s too big for one film, so we’re doing a series with episodes released one after another.

He is also known to be interested in the Mahabharata, one of India’s most revered mythological epics. Khan has declared multiple times his wish to introduce the plot to the world—a plot rich in multilayered ideas and based on the conflict between the two royal families and their philosophical and moral difficulties. No one would have the courage to contradict the complexity of the epic, he added.

The statement made by Khan closely follows the announcement that one of his highly associated actors in India, Ranbir Kapoor, will be playing Lord Rama in the epic Ramayana. Nitesh Tiwari has scheduled its release for Diwali 2026. Kapoor plays the heroic prince of Ayodhya, whereas Khan is getting used to the elaborate world of Mahabharata, and we are guaranteed a cinematic epic thriller that explores the eternal principles of sacrifice, war, and destiny.

Both movements receive an added boost by the fact that Khan released his latest movie, Sitare Zameen Par, on June 20, 2025, to great success. Under the direction of RS Prasanna, it received universal acclaim and collected an estimated 28 million dollars (approximately 233 crore rupees) globally, as tracked by Sacnilk. Following the release of Sitare Zameen Par to theatres, Khan’s success has motivated him to maintain his earlier commitment to directing his attention towards Mahabharata.

Unlike an average Bollywood film, Khan is planning the Mahabharata as a grand series that will have a huge cast and philosophical substance. Being based in the roots of the Indian culture but still providing solely human concerns, the epic represents a fairly ambitious project taken by the fastidious filmmaker. Other information concerning the cast, the director or even the timeline of production is still ambiguous, but the undying commitment of Khan is evidence of a project of the envisaged magnitude.

Given Bollywood’s success in utilising the country’s mythology (Indian epics), Khan’s series Mahabharata has the potential to transform the way epic tales are conveyed on the screen. Eagerness is building for what should provoke a film that will be a monumental breakthrough.
