Shillong: Surprisingly, Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife of murdered industrialist Raja Raghuvanshi, turned herself in to the police in Uttar Pradesh; however, the circumstances surrounding her loss during their honeymoon in Meghalaya have created a confusing situation, and the facts remain unclear.
On May 11, Raja, 28, and Sonam, 24, got married and took off on their honeymoon to Meghalaya on May 20. They went missing on May 23 after they checked out of their homestay in Nongriat. Raja’s butchered body was located on June 2 at the bottom of a gorge beside Weisawdong Falls. Sonam, who was at first thought to have been kidnapped, gave herself up late on Sunday at the police station and explained to her family at a nearby dhaba.
An affair with Raj Kushwaha made Sonam, in the opinion of the Meghalaya Police, hire three murderers from Madhya Pradesh to kill Raja. Davis Marak, the Deputy Inspector General, explained to India Today TV that Raja’s wife wanted Raja dead and planned it all. As many as three attackers are in custody, and another is still on the run. Surveillance tapes and the guide’s story that the couple was seen with three men on May 23 back up the information the police are working with.
But Raja’s brother Vipul does not agree with what the police claim. He told the media that Sonam’s brother Govind requested her detention, not her own initiative. Before Sonam admits what she did, we won’t judge her to be guilty. He emphasised that their former boss had given them assurances, and he called for a CBI inquiry. Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, also said the same thing and accused the Meghalaya Police of making up details. He said that his daughter found her way to Ghazipur on her own, and he demanded a thorough inquiry.
It took only seven days for the case to be cracked, and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma commended the work done. “Three attackers were in custody, a female suspect has surrendered, and we are still working on the operation,” was what the WEF reported. But things that were found, like a bloodstained machete, a raincoat, and a broken phone, raise doubts about the motive, especially since Raja’s jewellery was gone and the crime could have been a robbery.
While Sonam waits to go to Meghalaya for the trial, the police and family disagree. As the case is ongoing, people have been urging for a CBI probe to shed light on a tragedy that brought shock to many.
