NewDelhi: In a sharply critical review of the Modi government’s dealings with Pakistan, Congress senior leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has indicated the need for a much more diplomatic and abstract policy. Addressing a recent function, Aiyar underlined the manifold factors that shape the India-Pakistan relationship and suggested dialogue in place of military action.
Pakistan Policy Observation
Aiyar mercilessly criticised the current government’s conduct of Pakistan issues, remarking, “We completely lack the courage to speak about the things concerning both nations to Pakistan, yet we have chosen options such as surgical strikes.” He pointed out that Pakistan, which is known for terrorism, also suffers from it a lot.
Changing Geopolitical Landscape with Afghanistan
The Congress leader marked the turn of the geopolitical situation; he said that instead of the canvas strategy of Pakistan to bring the Taliban to power in Afghanistan, it has backfired. Aiyar laid out, “Today, the Taliban in Afghanistan poses the biggest threat to Pakistan itself.”
Initiation of Negotiation
Apart from the former PM Manmohan Singh, the Congress politician deeply believes in holding direct talks with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue and that this would bring peace to both. He noted the strategic importance of a further diplomatic approach to this: “We should chat with Pakistan as former PM Manmohan Singh did on the Kashmir issue.”.
Cultural Bonds/Regional Politics
Aiyar threw light on the commonalities in the cultures of Indians and Pakistanis in relation to their “tragedy of partition.” He shared personal experiences, including, “Being a Tamilian, I no longer see any difference between my Punjabi wife and a Pakistani Punjabi.”.
Situation in Bangladesh
The Congress leader also elaborated on the Bangladeshi scene, though he commended PM Sheikh Hasina’s attempts. But he referred to the reports of the attacks on Hindu minorities that these incidents, at times, are politically influenced and highly inflated.
Praise for Sheikh Hasina
Aiyar marked his final statement by appreciating and respecting the contributions of Sheikh Hasina in India-Bangladesh relations. He showed a sign of hope, asking whether the agreement of the positive things she did for India is unanimous and whether they should really be her guests as long as she wants them.
