New Delhi: On Friday, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar took a sharp dig at Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi during his address to the Indian community in Geneva, stressing the importance of hard work for India’s development. Reflecting on the progress India has made in the past decade under the Modi government, Jaishankar spoke about the massive infrastructure projects being undertaken and the need for sustained human resource development.
In his address, Jaishankar remarked, “Life is not a knock. Life requires hard work. Anyone who has worked hard knows this.” His comment was seen as a direct reference to Rahul Gandhi’s election promises, including his pledge to transfer ₹1 lakh to the bank accounts of women from every poor family in India if his party wins.
Jaishankar continued to emphasise that significant development, such as the infrastructure projects transforming the nation, requires both planning and persistent effort. “We must build infrastructure and implement policies, but none of this happens without hard work.”
During his interaction, Jaishankar also touched on the state of India-China relations following the June 2020 clashes in the Galwan Valley, stating that the violence at the border has deeply impacted the bilateral relationship. “We’ve made some progress, with about 75 per cent of the disengagement issues resolved,” he explained, but noted that further steps are needed to fully normalise ties.
Jaishankar’s remarks reflect the Indian government’s focus on both internal development and external diplomacy, while subtly criticising opposition figures for making promises he suggests lack substance. As India prepares for upcoming elections, the Foreign Minister’s statements signal a commitment to continue the hard work and strategic planning needed to guide the nation’s future.
