Kolkata: A Kolkata court on Tuesday granted permission to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct polygraph tests on former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh, a civic volunteer, and four junior doctors in connection with the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a female doctor. The CBI had submitted a petition to Kolkata’s Sealdah court last Thursday, seeking the court’s approval for the tests after identifying discrepancies in Ghosh’s statements during questioning.
The CBI has been intensively questioning Sandeep Ghosh for the past week, following the tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College. The agency’s persistence led to a request for a polygraph test, which was granted by the court to further scrutinise the accuracy of the statements given by the individuals involved.
The investigation took a new turn on Wednesday night when the CBI searched Ghosh’s car and interrogated his driver, revealing that Ghosh had used a vehicle belonging to the health department. This search is part of the broader investigation, which has increasingly focused on Ghosh’s role and actions following the discovery of the doctor’s body.
The tragic event has sparked widespread protests, particularly among the junior doctors at the hospital, who have been vocally demanding justice. From the outset, they have called for Sandeep Ghosh’s resignation, citing his alleged involvement in the case. Under mounting pressure from the ongoing protests, Ghosh eventually resigned but was controversially appointed as the director of another hospital, leading to further public outcry.
In response to the escalating situation, the Calcutta High Court intervened, placing Ghosh on leave and later removing him from his position as National Medical Director. Seeking protection amid the intense scrutiny, Ghosh approached the high court, which ordered the state to provide him with necessary security. A police picket has since been stationed outside his residence.
As the investigation continues, one individual has already been arrested in connection with the case, and he, along with the four junior doctors, will also undergo polygraph tests. The CBI’s efforts to uncover the truth behind this tragic case are ongoing, with the polygraph tests expected to play a crucial role in the investigation.
