New Delhi: In a recent interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau discussed the evolving relationship between India and Canada following allegations of an Indian agent’s involvement in a plot to assassinate Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannu.
Trudeau highlighted a noticeable change in India’s tone after the US issued a warning regarding the alleged plot. He expressed his understanding that India can no longer adopt an aggressive stance towards Canada.
The Prime Minister noted a newfound openness in India’s cooperation, which was lacking previously. He commended the Indian government’s willingness to take a more humble approach, recognising that aggressive actions alone would not resolve the issues between the two countries.
Trudeau emphasised Canada’s desire to avoid confrontation with India, stressing the importance of working together on shared interests, such as the Indo-Pacific strategy. However, he maintained that Canada would steadfastly defend human rights, security, and the rule of law.
Trudeau’s comments stem from allegations he made in September, suggesting the possible involvement of an Indian agent in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. These allegations further strained the relationship between India and Canada.
In November, federal prosecutors in the US charged an Indian national, Nikhil Gupta, with involvement in the foiled assassination plot targeting the Sikh separatist leader.
The developments have prompted a reassessment of the relationship between India and Canada, with both sides seeking a more constructive and cooperative approach moving forward.
