COVID-19 Death Toll Rises in Kerala, New Variant Detected in Multiple States

New Delhi: The death toll from COVID-19 in Kerala has reached 16 in the last two weeks, with three more deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The new variant of COVID, JN.1, has been detected in three states in India, with cases also reported in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has urged people to take precautions, while NITI Aayog member VK Paul has also called for caution. On Tuesday, 614 new cases of coronavirus were reported in the country, with 292 cases in Kerala alone. The total number of active cases in the country has reached 2311.

The JN.1 variant has been confirmed in 21 cases in India, with the virus spreading to more than 40 countries. The central government has asked states and union territories to increase surveillance following the emergence of the new variant.

In Madhya Pradesh, two people from the same family have been found infected with the JN.1 variant. The Rajasthan government has also issued an alert after two new cases of coronavirus were reported in Jaisalmer.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has held a meeting with state health ministers to review the situation, calling for caution and vigilance. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the JN.1 variant a variant of interest but has not yet classified it as a variant of concern.
