New Delhi: In a shocking development that has caused a stir on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, a professor is facing severe allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour. According to reports, at least 10 students have filed formal complaints against the accused educator with the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), prompting an official investigation into the matter.
The controversy reportedly came to light about a month ago when a female student first stepped forward to register a complaint. Subsequently, several senior and former students also gathered the courage to report similar harrowing experiences involving the same professor.
According to sources close to the development, the complainants have levelled serious accusations against the professor, alleging that he used to summon students to his official campus residence on the pretext of academic meetings or parties. During these visits, the professor allegedly engaged in inappropriate conduct and attempted to seek sexual favours. Furthermore, some students have claimed that the accused regularly passed vulgar, indecent, and objectionable comments during his classroom lectures.
The university’s Internal Complaints Committee has taken cognisance of the multiple grievances and initiated a thorough probe into the allegations. As the investigation progresses, media reports suggest that the ICC might question more students, which could potentially lead to an increase in the number of formal complaints.
Presently, the entire matter is being handled through the university’s internal fact-finding mechanism, and no official complaint has been registered with the Delhi Police as of now. The JNU administration has also maintained a stoic silence, and an official statement regarding the scandal is still awaited.
Authorities have stated that any further disciplinary or legal action against the accused professor will be determined solely based on the findings and recommendations of the ongoing ICC investigation. The incident has once again sparked widespread discussions and concerns regarding student safety and the conduct of faculty members within premier educational institutions.
