New Delhi: The Indian box office is bracing for a massive wave of South Indian cinema across late 2026 and 2027. With major pan-India star cast pairings, record-breaking budgets, and cutting-edge technology, a slate of nine highly anticipated regional films is poised to challenge Bollywood’s dominance at the ticket counters.
Leading the charge is superstar Rajinikanth in ‘Jailer 2’, the much-awaited sequel to his recent blockbuster. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film sees Rajinikanth returning to his iconic ‘Tiger’ persona, joined by a powerhouse supporting cast including Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty. The film is slated for a theatrical release on October 15, 2026.
Hot on its heels is ‘Ranabaali’, starring real-life couple Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna. Sharing the screen for the first time since their marriage, the duo will appear in a period drama set between 1876 and 1878. Directed by Rahul Sankrityayan, the film releases on October 16, 2026. Mandanna will also close the year with ‘Mysaa’, a female-led high-octane action thriller releasing on November 27, 2026, where fans will see her in a fierce, unprecedented action avatar.
Looking ahead to 2027, SS Rajamouli’s massive cinematic project ‘Varanasi’ is undoubtedly one of the most talked-about films. Scheduled for April 7, 2027, the big-budget spectacle marks the first on-screen collaboration between Mahesh Babu and global star Priyanka Chopra.
Adding to the excitement is the sci-fi action drama ‘Raaka’, marking the maiden collaboration between director Atlee Kumar and icon Allu Arjun. Set for a 2027 release, the film has already set a Guinness World Record by employing real-time motion capture technology with 37 actors simultaneously.
Prabhas continues his massive pan-India streak with two major titles. Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s highly anticipated ‘Spirit’, starring Prabhas alongside Triptii Dimri, is set for a massive scale 2027 release. Furthermore, the actor’s delayed project ‘Fauzi’, directed by Hanu Raghavapudi and featuring Anupam Kher and Mithun Chakraborty, is expected to announce a revised release timeline soon.
In the mythological and horror spaces, Prashanth Varma’s ‘Mahakali’ will see Bollywood actor Akshaye Khanna making his Telugu debut as Shukracharya, releasing on January 8, 2027. Finally, fans of dark fantasy are gearing up for ‘Tumbbad 2’. Produced by Aanand L Rai and Sohum Shah, who also leads the cast, the horror sequel will hit theatres on December 3, 2027.
