New Delhi: Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, vowing to improve cooperation based on equality, as a sign that the countries want better ties no matter their differences.

Yunus wrote the letter on June 6 in response to Modi’s greetings of Eid-ul-Adha sent to the Bangladeshis and interim government. Bangladesh’s interim administration posted the message on X to highlight that both countries are determined to cooperate. Yunus underlined that understanding and respect among our nations will continue to shape the relationship between us for the well-being of both countries’ people.

Matters became tense once former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted in August 2024 after the student revolt cut short her 15-year rule. Bangladesh’s ban on the Awami League and its attempts to extradite Hasina have exacerbated the ongoing issues between Hasina and Dhaka. Issues about minority safety, the borders, and a $10 billion trade gap have led to more difficulties in relations between the countries, as reported by the media.

Quoting Modi’s message from June 5, Yunus also expressed a desire to see a stronger partnership between the countries. Yunus said, “I see that our major principles are represented in your speech,” and expressed wishes to both Modi and the Indian population. While few users supported the diplomatic move, others discovered that it did not help, as the country is still grappling with border clashes and attacks on minorities.

Experts think the exchange displays a cautious wish for opening up to each other. “Thus, diplomatic ties are still possible, despite the change in temperature between both leaders,” stated the commentator. Still, problems exist, as India wants stability in Bangladesh, and Dhaka keeps requesting action on trade and extradition matters.

The diplomatic measure shows the fragile relationship between India and Bangladesh. Despite all the pressure between the nations, sharing respect for one another provides a chance for better engagement within the region.
