New Delhi: Your toenails may be carrying more germs than a toilet seat, and health experts say poor foot hygiene could silently increase the risk of infections and skin-related problems. Doctors have warned that dirt, sweat, dead skin and bacteria often accumulate beneath toenails, creating an ideal environment for harmful microbes to grow.

According to health specialists, the feet remain covered for long hours inside shoes and socks, especially during summer and humid weather. This trapped moisture encourages fungal and bacterial growth, particularly when nails are not cleaned properly or trimmed regularly. Experts say many people focus on hand hygiene but ignore foot care, despite the feet being exposed to dust, sweat and germs throughout the day.

Doctors explained that long or dirty toenails can become breeding grounds for bacteria. In some cases, fungal infections, foul smell, itching, swelling and nail discolouration may develop. People suffering from diabetes or weak immunity are considered more vulnerable to complications arising from foot infections.

Health experts have advised people to wash their feet daily, dry them properly after bathing and avoid wearing damp socks or tight shoes for extended periods. They also recommended trimming nails regularly and maintaining overall foot hygiene to prevent infections.

Medical professionals further noted that public places such as swimming pools, gyms and shared washrooms can also expose feet to harmful fungi and bacteria. They stressed that simple hygiene habits can significantly reduce the chances of infection and keep feet healthy.
