Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress has postponed an important meeting of its legislators that was scheduled to be addressed by party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, amid continuing political turbulence following the alleged attack on him in South 24 Parganas district.
The meeting, which was expected to bring together TMC MLAs for discussions on organisational matters and future political strategy, was scheduled to take place in Kolkata. However, party leaders announced that the programme had been cancelled for the time being after Abhishek Banerjee sustained injuries during the recent Sonarpur incident and is currently recovering under medical supervision.
According to party sources, Abhishek Banerjee was expected to play a key role in the meeting and address legislators on organisational priorities, coordination among elected representatives and political developments in the state. The postponement comes at a time when the Trinamool Congress is actively assessing the political fallout of recent events and preparing its response to allegations of post poll violence.
The development follows the controversy surrounding the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur on May 30. Banerjee had gone to meet families reportedly affected by post poll violence when a group of protesters allegedly hurled eggs, stones and other objects at him. The TMC leader claimed that a brick struck near his eye and accused BJP backed elements of orchestrating the attack. The BJP has denied the allegations and maintained that the protests reflected local public anger rather than a planned political assault.
Following the incident, Banerjee was taken to a private hospital in Kolkata, where he underwent medical examinations. Doctors later advised treatment and observation at home. Senior TMC leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, visited him and expressed concern over his health and security.
The cancellation of the legislators’ meeting is being viewed as significant because it comes at a politically sensitive time. The Trinamool Congress has been holding consultations with party leaders and elected representatives amid heightened tensions with the BJP following the Assembly elections. Political observers believe the meeting was expected to provide strategic direction to legislators and strengthen organisational coordination.
Meanwhile, the attack on Banerjee has continued to dominate political discourse in West Bengal. Several opposition leaders have condemned the violence, while both the TMC and BJP have traded accusations over responsibility for the incident.
Party leaders have indicated that the legislators’ meeting will be rescheduled once Abhishek Banerjee recovers and is able to participate. Until then, the Trinamool Congress is likely to focus on both the investigation into the Sonarpur incident and its political response to the controversy.
The postponement underscores the impact the attack has had on the party’s immediate organisational plans, even as the political battle surrounding the incident continues to intensify across the state.
