New Delhi: WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to hide sensitive parts of a message before sending it, giving people more control over how information appears in chats. The feature is currently under development and is expected to enter beta testing in the coming weeks.
According to the report, the upcoming tool will work like a new formatting option inside WhatsApp. Users will be able to select a specific part of a message and hide it behind a blurred layer. The receiver will have to tap on the hidden portion to reveal the content.
The feature is likely to be useful in conversations where users want to discuss movies, web series, sports results, game updates or any other spoiler related information without revealing it directly. It can also help make group conversations more controlled, especially when some members may not want to see sensitive details immediately.
The report says the tool may not remain limited to plain text messages. It is expected to work with media captions as well. In the future, WhatsApp may also bring photos and videos under this feature, allowing users to hide visual content before sending it.
This update is part of WhatsApp’s wider push to improve user experience and privacy. The Meta owned messaging platform has been rolling out several new features in recent months, focusing on better control, safer communication and more flexible chat options.
Along with the sensitive content hiding tool, WhatsApp is also reportedly working on another privacy feature called “After Reading”. Once introduced, this feature will allow users to make messages disappear immediately after they are read. Users may also get options to set disappearance timings such as 5 minutes, 1 hour and 12 hours. If the message is not read, it may automatically disappear after 24 hours.
This feature will be different from the existing disappearing messages option, as it will focus more on the moment when the receiver actually reads the message. For users who share private or time sensitive information, this could offer an added layer of control.
While WhatsApp has not officially rolled out these features for all users yet, the developments indicate that the platform is moving towards more personalised privacy settings. If implemented smoothly, the sensitive content hiding tool could become popular among users who want to share information without immediately exposing every detail in a chat.
