Bhopal: The ancient, holy city of Ujjain, best known for the spiritual calm of the Mahakaleshwar temple, has suddenly mutated into the epicenter of a raging political storm. On Tuesday, the tranquil state capital of Madhya Pradesh woke up to an aggressive offensive by the state opposition, as senior leaders of the Congress party lined up in a packed press room to level explosive allegations. Armed with bureaucratic documents, the opposition targeted the highest seat of power in the state, transforming a complex land re-zoning dispute into a high-stakes battle of accountability.
At the center of this gathering political tempest is Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Leading the charge, Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Chief Jitu Patwari and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Umang Singhar jointly demanded the immediate resignation of the Chief Minister. The opposition has alleged a massive land scam in Ujjain involving the arbitrary master plan changes of agricultural land to commercial and residential zones, a move they claim has uniquely benefited people close to the political establishment.
The controversy centers on the Ujjain Master Plan 2035. The Congress party claims that standard town and country planning procedures were bypassed to artificially inflate land prices. Jitu Patwari alleged that large swathes of agricultural fields—originally earmarked for farming or Simhastha Kumbh Mela utility zones—were quietly re-classified into premium residential and commercial categories. To ensure complete accountability, the Congress high command has demanded the constitution of an independent judicial probe headed by a sitting High Court judge.
This political battle matters immensely because it directly impacts the urban future of Ujjain, a city that hosts millions of pilgrims during the periodic Simhastha Kumbh Mela congregations. The opposition has highlighted that changing land use patterns near crucial religious transit points threatens future public infrastructure. Furthermore, LoP Umang Singhar stated that the party is preparing a comprehensive dossier to present to central investigative agencies if the state government refuses to initiate a transparent judicial review.
Refusing to let the matter rest in Bhopal press rooms, the Congress leadership announced a multi-tiered public agitation. Over the next fortnight, block and district level units across Madhya Pradesh are slated to hold protest rallies to take the allegations directly to the public. The party also plans to disrupt the upcoming state assembly session, signaling that they have no intention of letting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration off the hook easily.
The ruling dispensation, however, has dismissed the allegations as completely baseless, labeling the Congress offensive a desperate political stunt designed to grab media attention. Government spokespersons maintain that all modifications in the Ujjain Master Plan 2035 strictly adhere to regulatory frameworks, keeping the city’s long-term infrastructure growth in mind. As both sides dig in their heels, the land dispute is rapidly moving past administrative technicalities to become a defining political test for Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s government.
