Nottingham: Following their historic T20 World Cup victory earlier this year, the Indian cricket team has found itself struggling in subsequent bilateral series. After a surprising series defeat against Ireland, the squad is now under immense pressure in the ongoing T20 series against England. Addressing mounting public concerns ahead of the crucial third match in Nottingham, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak shared vital insights into the recent slump.
Speaking to the media before the Trent Bridge encounter, Kotak firmly defended the team and attributed the recent losses to an ongoing period of transition. He pointed out that bringing in three to four young players and playing without regular senior leaders naturally leads to temporary setbacks. Kotak highlighted that while the team always strives for perfection, such fluctuations are simply a part of the sport. He reminded critics of India’s completely dominant run over the last two years, a golden period which included lifting both the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup trophies.
The batting coach openly admitted that the squad is deeply missing the balance provided by star all rounder Hardik Pandya. With emerging player Nitish Reddy currently sidelined due to injury, the management has placed its trust in new talents like Suryansh Shedge. Kotak noted that even if these youngsters do not consistently make the playing eleven, sharing the dressing room provides them with invaluable learning opportunities.
Kotak also shed light on the highly discussed debut of Vaibhav Suryavanshi during the Manchester T20 clash. Making his international appearance at just fifteen years and ninety nine days old, Suryavanshi broke Sachin Tendulkar’s long standing age record. The coach mentioned that the young prodigy was always slated for a debut once selected and advised him to simply stick to his natural game without taking extra pressure.
Looking ahead, Kotak stated that the primary objective for the management is to sharpen all three departments of the game to build a formidable squad for the next World Cup. However, he clarified that the immediate focus remains solely on securing a much needed win at Trent Bridge on Tuesday to stay alive in the current series against England.
