Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal is likely to undertake its first major cabinet expansion soon, with several senior leaders and newly elected legislators expected to find a place in Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s council of ministers.
Sources within the party indicate that discussions over the cabinet reshuffle and expansion are underway, as the BJP government looks to strengthen administrative representation across different regions and communities in the state. The move comes weeks after the formation of the new government following the BJP’s victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Suvendu Adhikari, who took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal on May 9, had initially inducted a small team of ministers into his cabinet. The government has since begun rolling out key policy decisions and administrative reforms, prompting the need for a broader ministerial structure to handle various departments more effectively.
Political observers believe the proposed expansion could accommodate leaders who played crucial roles in the BJP’s electoral campaign and organisational efforts. Representation from north Bengal, tribal dominated regions, border districts and urban centres is also expected to be a key factor in the selection process.
The BJP leadership is reportedly assessing regional balance, caste equations and administrative requirements before finalising the names. Several MLAs who secured significant victories in the Assembly elections are being seen as strong contenders for ministerial berths. However, the party has not officially confirmed any names so far.
The expansion is also being viewed as an attempt to consolidate the BJP’s position in the state after its historic electoral breakthrough. By bringing more leaders into governance, the party hopes to strengthen coordination between the government and the organisation at the grassroots level.
Since assuming office, the Adhikari government has announced a series of decisions, including the implementation of Ayushman Bharat in the state and administrative measures related to governance and public services. Party leaders maintain that expanding the cabinet will help accelerate decision making and ensure smoother execution of government programmes.
An official announcement regarding the cabinet expansion is expected after consultations between the state leadership and the BJP’s central leadership. Political circles in Kolkata are closely watching the developments, as the exercise could significantly shape the functioning of the new government in the coming months.
The final list of ministers is likely to reflect both political considerations and governance priorities as the BJP seeks to establish its first full term government in West Bengal.
