New Delhi: Driven by the upcoming festive season rush, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has achieved a historic milestone in its online ticketing operations. For the first time ever, the railway booking platform successfully processed over 20 lakh train tickets in a single day.

According to official data released by IRCTC, the platform logged a record-breaking 20,06,353 ticket bookings on September 7, 2026. The momentum continued strongly the following day, September 8, with approximately 19.50 lakh tickets booked. This massive surge easily shattered the previous year’s peak record, which stood at roughly 18.40 lakh tickets booked on a single day during the festive period.

The unprecedented numbers clearly demonstrate a significant behavioral shift among Indian railway passengers. Currently, a staggering 89 per cent of all reserved train tickets in India are booked online through the IRCTC platform, leaving only 11 per cent to offline counter bookings.

This record-breaking performance has been largely attributed to a massive backend infrastructural overhaul by the railways. Under the ‘NGeT Refresh’ initiative, IRCTC completely replaced its older servers with state-of-the-art hardware, effectively doubling the system’s overall capacity. Furthermore, a new beta user interface was rolled out on July 15, 2026. The upgraded dashboard now conveniently displays seat availability across multiple classes—such as Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier—on a single screen, making the booking process much faster for users.

Beyond hardware upgrades, IRCTC has also aggressively cracked down on fraudulent activities to ensure genuine passengers get confirmed seats. By deploying advanced Anti-BOT and Content Delivery Network (CDN) technologies, malicious bot traffic has been slashed by an impressive 55 to 65 per cent.

In one of the biggest digital cleanups in its history, the ticketing authority has permanently deactivated over 3.04 crore suspicious user IDs, while another 6.33 crore IDs have been sent for re-validation. Additionally, 16,041 suspicious email domains have been blocked from accessing the system.

To further level the playing field during peak hours, authorized ticketing agents such as YTSK and RTSA are restricted from booking Advance Reservation Period (ARP) tickets between 8:00 AM and 8:10 AM. Moreover, an Aadhaar-verified user ID has now been made mandatory to book tickets during the opening ARP window, a rule strictly enforced since October 2025.
