New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken a firm stance in the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On Tuesday (20th August), the court posed stern questions to the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government and the state police regarding the handling of the case. The apex court has also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a status report on the matter. The next hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
During the proceedings, the Supreme Court bench expressed severe concern over the incident. The court remarked that the crime committed against the young doctor was akin to “an act of an animal.” Highlighting the gravity of the issue, the court announced the formation of a National Task Force to examine the safety of medical professionals and the conditions in hospitals across the country. The task force is expected to provide its recommendations to the court.
The bench, led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, and comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala, raised critical questions about the timeline of events. Justice Pardiwala questioned the details of the first FIR, asking who lodged it and when. “The family received the body at 8:30 pm, yet the FIR was only registered at 11:45 pm based on the father’s complaint. What was the hospital doing during this time?” the bench inquired.
The counsel representing the West Bengal government responded by stating that a medical board had been set up in accordance with the family’s wishes and that a complaint had been forwarded to the police at 2:30 pm.
The Supreme Court’s intervention in the case underscores its commitment to ensuring justice and accountability in this horrific incident.
