New Delhi: In the wake of the shocking rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed deep disappointment and concern over the incident, which has left the entire country in shock. Gandhi’s statement, issued on social media platform X, comes six days after the case first came to light.
In a lengthy post, Rahul Gandhi addressed the brutal crime, stating, “The whole country is shocked by the gruesome incident of rape and murder of the junior doctor in Kolkata. There is an atmosphere of insecurity among the doctors’ community and women due to the way layer after layer of cruel and inhuman acts with the trainee doctor are coming out in the open.”
Gandhi also criticized the local administration’s response to the case, alleging that efforts to protect the accused rather than seek justice for the victim raise serious questions about both the hospital and the local authorities. He underscored the alarming implications of the incident, questioning the safety of young women in educational institutions and professional environments, particularly in medical colleges.
“This incident has forced all of us to think that if doctors are not safe in a place like a medical college, then on what trust should parents send their daughters to study? Why are the stringent laws enacted after the Nirbhaya case also failing to stop such crimes?” Gandhi questioned.
Gandhi’s statement also highlighted the broader issue of rising cases of sexual violence across the country. He called for a united and decisive response from all political parties and social sectors, urging them to engage in serious discussions to address the increasing incidents of rape from Hathras to Unnao, from Kathua to Kolkata.
“I stand with the victim’s family in this unbearable pain. They should get justice at all costs and the culprits should be punished in such a way that it is presented like an example in society,” Gandhi asserted.
Rahul Gandhi’s comments follow an earlier statement by his sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who expressed her grief and outrage over the case on August 12. Priyanka Gandhi also took to X, calling the incident “heart-wrenching” and emphasizing the critical need for women’s safety in the workplace.
“The incident of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata is heart-wrenching. Safety of women at workplace is a huge issue in the country and it needs concerted efforts,” she wrote, urging the state government to take swift and stringent action to ensure justice for the victim’s family and her fellow doctors.
As the investigation into the horrific crime continues, the demands for justice from prominent political figures like Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi underscore the deep-seated concerns surrounding women’s safety and the efficacy of existing laws in preventing such heinous acts.
