Dehradun: As the long weekend arrived, scores of tourists from the plains thronged the picturesque hill stations of Uttarakhand, turning the serene mountain getaways into a nightmare of endless traffic jams. Popular tourist destinations like Mussoorie, Nainital, and the holy pilgrimage site of Kedarnath are currently witnessing severe gridlocks, leaving thousands of travellers and local residents stranded for hours.

In Mussoorie, affectionately known as the ‘Queen of the Hills’, the massive influx of vehicles has virtually choked the city’s infrastructure. The newly constructed Dehradun Expressway has made the commute smoother, ironically leading to an unprecedented rush of tourists from the Delhi-NCR region. The entire stretch from the Dehradun-Mussoorie route to various parts of the hill town is witnessing bumper-to-bumper traffic. A journey that typically takes a few minutes has turned into an agonising wait of several hours. Many tourists, who planned a relaxing weekend getaway, found themselves stuck in vehicles long before even reaching their hotels, exposing the severe challenges in local traffic management.

A similar chaotic situation is unfolding in the lake city of Nainital. Given its proximity to the national capital, tourists have arrived in large numbers, overwhelming the city’s limited carrying capacity. Long queues of vehicles have choked major entry points and internal roads, leaving families, including women and young children, stranded inside their cars for hours.

The heavy rush is not just limited to leisure destinations. The Kedarnath pilgrimage route is also bearing the brunt of the weekend crowd. According to local authorities, the parking facilities at key transit points like Sitapur and Sonprayag are operating at full capacity. The sheer volume of buses and private vehicles has created a bottleneck on the route, causing immense hardship for the devotees.

Taking cognisance of the worsening situation, the Rudraprayag Police have issued an urgent alert for pilgrims heading towards Kedarnath. The police have strictly appealed to the devotees to constantly check traffic and parking updates before commencing their journey and to adhere to the guidelines issued by the local administration to avoid further inconvenience.

As the hill state continues to struggle with the tourist influx, the situation once again highlights the urgent need for sustainable tourism and better traffic management to preserve the charm and ecological balance of the mountains.
