Wayanad: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is set to file her nomination for the upcoming Wayanad by-election on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. The announcement comes as she prepares to enter the electoral race for the Lok Sabha seat vacated by her brother, Rahul Gandhi. Before filing her nomination, Priyanka will participate in a roadshow alongside Rahul, who currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
The Wayanad by-election has gained significant attention due to Priyanka Gandhi’s candidacy, but it also sparked criticism from her political opponents. On Saturday, Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate Satyan Mokeri took aim at Priyanka, questioning her commitment to the constituency.
During his campaign, Mokeri asked whether Priyanka would remain engaged with the region if she wins the election, drawing comparisons to her brother Rahul. “Rahul Gandhi won here and left. How many days did he stay in Wayanad? Those who come here, win, and leave cannot contribute to the region’s development or solve its problems,” Mokeri remarked.
Mokeri’s candidacy was announced by the Communist Party of India (CPI) two days ago. He previously contested from Wayanad in 2014, narrowly losing to then-Congress candidate M I Shanavas. Known for his work in agriculture, Mokeri is a former MLA from the Nadapuram constituency in Kozhikode district.
Though nominated by Congress, Priyanka Gandhi has yet to begin her formal campaign in Wayanad. Her entry into the race has generated excitement among Congress supporters, but she faces significant challenges from the LDF, which is focusing its campaign on local issues, particularly in the agriculture sector.
The by-election in Wayanad became necessary after Rahul Gandhi chose to vacate the seat earlier this year, following his victory in the Rae Bareli constituency. Rahul had contested from both Rae Bareli and Wayanad in the general elections, opting to represent Rae Bareli after his win.
By-Election Date Set for November 13
The Election Commission of India has scheduled the Wayanad by-election for November 13, 2024, with the vote count to take place shortly after. As both the Congress and LDF ramp up their campaigns, the seat is expected to be hotly contested, with Priyanka Gandhi’s involvement adding a high-profile element to the race.
