The surge in his follower count occurred in less than 24 hours after he posted a video message on the social media platform late Thursday night.
With this massive overnight addition, Prime Minister Modi further solidified his position as the most followed global leader on Instagram, having already crossed the historic milestone of 100 million followers on the platform.
The significant impact of this digital outreach was a key topic of discussion during a Union Cabinet meeting held on Friday. Sources reveal that after the formal meeting concluded, the Prime Minister shared this anecdote with his council of ministers. Using the massive response to his video as an example, he briefed the cabinet members on the critical importance of adapting to the priorities of the digital age.
During the interaction, the Prime Minister issued clear directives to all his ministers, advising them to strengthen their online presence and increase their activities on youth oriented platforms like Instagram. He explicitly asked them not to restrict their digital engagement solely to X (formerly Twitter). Instead, he urged them to actively focus on growing their follower base on platforms where the younger demographic is highly active.
Addressing the cabinet, PM Modi emphasised that the youth of the country are currently most active on Instagram. He noted that considering the massive presence of young citizens on the platform, there is no better medium to communicate the initiatives, policies, and welfare schemes of the government directly to them. To effectively share the government’s achievements, it is essential to connect with the youth on the digital platforms they prefer the most.
The directive comes at a time when the government is actively trying to assuage the concerns of the youth, particularly in light of ongoing student protests over examination irregularities.
