New Delhi: Coming back to New Delhi late Friday night after a two-day visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit the headlines during yet another diplomatic masterstroke that drew attention across the globe. American media has widely acclaimed the trip, hailing PM Modi’s statesmanship and negotiating skills as exemplary through high-level discussions and strategic engagements.
PM Modi met US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the visit, during which the two leaders discussed several bilateral subjects, including trade and defence ties. Seasoned journalists called it a ”masterclass in diplomacy,” illustrating the way PM Modi handled the dense play of international relations with great ease and time-tested capability.
During the talks, President Trump, known for his authoritarian negotiation style, called India the “Tariff King.” However, PM Modi read the discussions well, and Trump was left with an endorsement to be visibly impressed by the Indian leader. Modi, he said, is a “great leader” and declared that US-India ties were “BIG things” that were about to “happen.”. As he realised the strength of the ties that unite the nations, he said, “We are going to do some great deals with each other.”
Even the American media praised Indian PM Modi on the social media platform. X; Senior journalist of CNN Will Ripley said on X that PM Modi has excellent diplomatic skills. Modi’s interaction with Trump has been one of the most favourable interactions with a world leader by the US President after Japan’s PM, Ripley pointed out. Ripley tweeted, “PM Modi’s meeting with President Trump is a tutorial for world leaders on how to deal with him.” According to him, even the complex subjects—like reciprocal tariffs—were discussed calmly and forthrightly, showing Modi as a leader.
The talks also produced major results in defence and energy. The offer of old F-35 stealth fighter jets to India is in line with deepening the US-Indian strategic partnership. Moreover, the story also mentions that India will also receive greater US investment in nuclear energy as part of bilateral cooperation.
The high point of the visit was PM Modi identifying cleverly with the branding of “MIGA + MAGA = MEGA,” which clicks with President Trump. Ripley complimented Modi’s clever branding, saying Modi built the slogan around Trump’s sensibility. Ripley said, “It’s the sort of messaging that Trump loves. Even the US president acknowledged Modi’s superior negotiation skills: “PM Modi has nobody for competition (when it comes to negotiations).” He is a much better negotiator than we are.”
