Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has firmly thrown his weight behind Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries amid the escalating Iran-Israel conflict that has spilt over into US military installations across the region.
In a strongly-worded statement on X, Sharif condemned Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent missile attacks on American bases in Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain, and even Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh. He also criticised the strikes that hit the Israeli cities of Haifa and Galilee.
“In these challenging times, Pakistan stands united with Saudi Arabia and our fellow Gulf nations,” Sharif posted. “We are ready to play our role in restoring peace and pray that the blessings of Ramadan bring stability to our region.”
The Prime Minister held detailed telephonic talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, during which both sides expressed deep concern over the rising tensions. Sharif also expressed sorrow over the tragic death of a Pakistani national in Abu Dhabi.
The Saudi authorities labelled Iran’s attack on Riyadh and the eastern province as “cowardly” and asserted its successful thwarting.
The fallout has already disrupted civilian life: Dubai, a major aviation hub, reported widespread flight cancellations and delays after the UAE partially closed its airspace.
With the Middle East on edge, Sharif’s message underscores Pakistan’s commitment to de-escalation and regional solidarity as the holy month of Ramadan begins.
