New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s population control pitch has found support from an unlikely quarter.
Senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram has lauded Modi’s vision and exhorted the citizens to welcome his initiative. Modi’s call for ban on single-use plastic and respect for wealth creators during his Independence Day speech has also been lauded by him.
In his tweets, Chidambaram said the PM’s concern over population growth and asking the nation to shun single-use plastic must become people’s movement.
Here’s what he had to say:
All of us must welcome three announcements made by the PM on I-Day
> Small family is a patriotic duty
> Respect wealth creators
> Shun single-use plastic— P. Chidambaram (@PChidambaram_IN) August 16, 2019
Of the three exhortations, I hope the FM and her legion of tax officials and investigators heard the PM’s second exhortation loud and clear

The first and third exhortations must become people’s movements. There are hundreds of dedicated voluntary organisations that are willing to lead the movements at local levels

According to a UN report, India is set to become the most populated country by 2027, surpassing China.
