New Delhi: In a landmark decision that promises to reshape higher education pathways, Delhi University (DU) has overhauled its PhD admission process. The university will now allow students who complete its four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) to apply directly for doctoral studies, effectively eliminating the mandatory requirement of a Master’s degree.
According to the newly established guidelines, direct entry into the PhD programme is not automatic for all graduates. The university has set strict academic benchmarks, requiring general category students to secure a minimum of 7.5 CGPA across their four-year undergraduate degree. For candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories, the minimum eligibility threshold has been relaxed to a 7.0 CGPA.
University officials have confirmed that this direct PhD pathway has been introduced as a special measure specifically for the upcoming 2026-27 academic session. The move is strategically timed to benefit the university’s inaugural FYUP batch, who are slated to complete their four-year degrees in 2026. The new provision has been formally incorporated into DU’s academic ordinance following approvals from both the Academic Council and the Executive Council.
Official data highlights the scale of this initiative. DU’s first FYUP batch commenced in the 2022-23 academic year with a massive enrollment of 75,948 students. While more than 40,000 students opted to exit the programme with a traditional degree after their third year in 2025, approximately 35,943 students chose to continue into the fourth year. These final-year students are now perfectly positioned to take advantage of this accelerated academic route.
The fourth year of the FYUP is uniquely designed to integrate research methodology and hands-on projects into undergraduate education. By identifying real-world problems and developing research-based solutions, students are groomed for the rigours of a doctoral programme much earlier than previous generations.
Academics note that this transition aligns Delhi University’s degree structure with global standards, simplifying the academic journey for research-oriented students. By removing the additional year typically spent acquiring a postgraduate degree, the university aims to foster an early research mindset and retain top academic talent within its ecosystem. Eligible students are currently being advised to begin preparing their research proposals ahead of the formal admission notifications.
