New Delhi: A Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court in Delhi has framed charges against former Popular Front of India (PFI) chairman E. Abubacker and 20 other accused in a major terror conspiracy case linked to the banned organisation. The court’s decision marks a significant step towards the commencement of trial in one of the country’s most closely watched terrorism related investigations.

The case stems from a nationwide crackdown launched by the NIA in 2022 against the Popular Front of India and its office bearers. Investigating agencies have alleged that PFI leaders and members were involved in a larger conspiracy aimed at raising funds, recruiting cadres, radicalising youth and organising training camps to further unlawful and terrorist activities across different parts of the country.

According to the NIA, the accused persons were part of an organised network that allegedly sought to advance the objectives of the banned organisation through covert operations, recruitment drives and ideological indoctrination. The agency has claimed that several senior functionaries played key roles in planning and supervising activities that posed a threat to national security and public order.

E. Abubacker, one of the founding leaders and former chairman of the PFI, was arrested during the nationwide raids conducted in September 2022. The NIA has accused him of being actively involved in overseeing recruitment, radicalisation and the organisation of training camps. Investigators have also alleged that he was connected to financial transactions that supported the activities under scrutiny.

The charges have been framed under various provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and other relevant laws. Prosecutors contend that the accused were engaged in activities intended to create social unrest, promote extremist ideology and undermine the sovereignty and integrity of India. The accused, however, have denied the allegations against them.

The framing of charges indicates that the court found sufficient grounds to proceed with the trial after examining the material presented by the prosecution. It does not amount to a finding of guilt, and the charges will now be tested through the judicial process during the trial.

The PFI was banned by the Central Government in September 2022 for five years under anti terror laws, with authorities alleging links to extremist activities and organisations. Since then, multiple investigations involving the outfit and its members have been pursued by the NIA across several states.

With charges now formally framed against Abubacker and the other accused, the case is set to enter the trial stage, where the prosecution and defence will present evidence and arguments before the special court.
