Ahmednagar: Reacting sharply to the mass defection of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MPs to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), veteran social activist Anna Hazare has called for stringent anti-defection laws in the country. He expressed deep concern over the prevailing political culture, alleging that politicians are frequently switching sides out of greed for power and money, which is detrimental to a healthy democracy.

Commenting on the recent political upheaval where top AAP leaders, including Raghav Chadha, jumped ship, Hazare stated that the vicious cycle of using “money for power and power for money” is leaving national interests behind. He urged voters to elect only honest candidates with strong character.
However, reflecting on the freedom of choice in a democratic setup, Hazare noted, “In a democracy, everyone has their own opinion. It is not right to suppress anyone’s views.” According to the veteran crusader, whose India Against Corruption movement initially birthed the AAP, “People have different perspectives in a democracy, and some
differences of opinion are natural. There may be some disagreements or differences in thinking, which is why some people might choose to leave a party.”
Highlighting the root cause of such splits, he added, “The party was built from a movement. Today, the party is breaking. When selfishness creeps in, people break away. If the society and the country were kept at the forefront, no one would leave.”
The reaction comes on the heels of Raghav Chadha officially joining the BJP alongside AAP MPs Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal. Chadha claimed that a total of seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs have decided to quit the party. While three have formally joined the BJP, others like Swati Maliwal have confirmed their resignations from the AAP.
