Kolkata: The mother of the trainee doctor who was murdered and sexually assaulted at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a year ago has expressed a desire to see Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She needs his assistance to seek justice for her daughter. The devastated mother talked of her daughter’s dreams and how sadly her life passed on International Women’s Day.
On August 9, 2024, the junior doctor, aged 31, was discovered dead in a seminar room where she had been sexually assaulted. This had set off national demonstrations and upheaval. The mother laments that this tragedy occurred seven months ago, but the daughter is still not seeing justice, and their death certificate is still lacking.
“If a woman doctor cannot be safe in her own workplace, where is safety?” She was curious as to why women could not feel safe in their own workplaces. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul has acknowledged the mother’s wish to visit the Prime Minister; he is sure PM Modi will meet her and give her petition some thought.
Although anyone can request an audience with the Prime Minister, TMC leader and state Chandrima Bhattacharya underlined that it should be noted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee started actions in the case leading to the accused’s arrest. A district court recently sentenced Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, to life in jail for the crime. Both the state government and the CBI are seeking the death sentence before the Calcutta High Court.
