New Delhi: Former Indian captain and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni has dropped a major hint regarding his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 45-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has confirmed that a final call on his participation in IPL 2027 will be made before December, just in time for the upcoming mega auction.
The much-anticipated IPL 2027 auction is scheduled to take place in Goa during mid-December. Fans and franchise management have been eagerly waiting to know if ‘Thala’ will don the iconic yellow jersey for another season. When asked about his plans, Dhoni responded in his usual witty manner but made it clear that his physical condition will be the ultimate deciding factor.
“Before December, I have to see how ready I am to play another season,” Dhoni said, indicating that his body’s response to training will dictate his final decision.
Questions about his retirement have intensified after his physical struggles during the previous edition. Dhoni was unable to play the entirety of the IPL 2026 season due to persistent fitness issues. A nagging calf injury kept the veteran cricketer off the field for significant portions of the tournament, raising doubts about his continuation in the grueling T20 format.
Over the last few years, his role in the CSK batting lineup has visibly shortened to manage his workload. He now primarily steps out to bat during the final few overs of an innings, where he still manages to entertain crowds with his trademark power-hitting.
Despite his limited time at the crease in recent seasons, Dhoni’s legacy and impact on the tournament remain unmatched. He stands as one of the leading run-scorers in IPL history, amassing 5,439 runs in 278 matches, which includes 24 half-centuries. As one of the most successful captains in the league’s history, he has led the Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. For now, the cricketing world waits with bated breath for December to see what the legendary captain finally decides.
