Major Fire Erupts on Cargo Ship Southwest of Goa; Indian Coast Guard Leads Rescue Effort

Panaji: A severe fire broke out on a cargo ship approximately 102 nautical miles southwest of Goa, prompting an immediate and extensive rescue operation by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The vessel, transporting international goods from Mundra in Gujarat to Sri Lanka, was carrying hazardous materials classified as Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) when the fire ignited.

The ICG swiftly responded to the distress call by diverting one of its ships to the location. Despite adverse weather conditions, the Coast Guard vessel arrived on the scene and began combating the flames.

The crew members aboard the cargo ship, understandably distressed by the situation, have been reassured of their safety by the ICG team. To bolster the firefighting efforts, two additional Coast Guard ships were dispatched from Goa, and a Dornier aircraft was deployed to accelerate the rescue operations.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far. The Indian Coast Guard’s prompt action aims to safeguard the crew and minimise the environmental impact of the fire.

The situation is evolving, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
