Lockdown Averted COVID Deaths, But Cannot Go On Forever: NITI Aayog

New Delhi: NITI Aayog member Dr V K Paul on Friday said that the COVID-19 lockdown cannot go on forever, and it had achieved its purpose of averting a large number of deaths.

It is necessary now to create headwinds and make it difficult for the virus to spread by remaining alert and understanding the risks, he added.

Press Information Bureau explained in a tweet that around 14 – 29 lakh infections were avoided along with 37,000 – 78,000 deaths according to different models following the lockdown.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reported that over a lakh tests were done in a day for the 4th consecutive day. Nearly 1.19K people have so far tested positive and around 3.6K have lost their lives due to the virus.
