Bengaluru: The political atmosphere in Karnataka is rife with tension over the position of Chief Minister, as former Congress MP DK Suresh has come forward to push for his brother and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to lead the state. Suresh, who addressed the media in Bengaluru on Saturday, said, ”I have not concealed my ambition, but the time should be right.
Suresh said, ”No one can remove (Siddaramaiah) with such ease; a leader like him is not to be removed that easily. The party will decide.” When asked if he thinks Shivakumar would take up the role in the future, he said, “Shivakumar is a man of faith. In life, no one has the right to fully rely on others.
When asked if being Deputy CM was ”sufficient” for Shivakumar, Suresh dismissed the speculations and said the party would decide. Siddaramaiah is the CM now, so discussing such an issue doesn’t serve any purpose,” he said.
Suresh downplayed speculation of his brother having staked his claim to the top post earlier before the Congress’s high command, claiming that such visits were usual for party leaders in Delhi. Suresh said that Shivakumar’s meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were not secretive and were known to the party.
He further said that their family has been worshipping Lord Shiva for ages and defended his brother’s religious visits. He also emphasised that all states must get their rightful due as far as tax revenue is concerned. “You must realise that India is not only Gujarat or UP.”
On the other hand, Karnataka BJP MLA Suresh Gowda interpreted Shivakumar’s recent declaration about his Hindu identity as a precursor to a shift in political trends. In the party’s history, no Congress leader has ever spoken such words. The situation is more significant than this, and ‘political winds of change are blowing strong,’ he said.
He added, Shivakumar’s statements were also indications of a political restructuring. He appeared to speculate about Shivakumar’s potential transition to the BJP, stating that the decision to accept or reject him ultimately rested with the BJP leadership. Gowda said, “If the party calls him, it will be my duty to welcome him.
Gowda dismissed Shivakumar’s recent public appearances with Amit Shah, stating, “These are political calculations.” This government is operating under a false sense of security. He even alleged that Siddaramaiah would be the last Chief Minister of Karnataka from Congress and that the government was ‘on the verge of collapse.'”.
