Melbourne: Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah shocked everyone during the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne when he touched 200 wickets in Test cricket in the fastest possible manner for an Indian bowler. His best was made after getting rid of Travis Head in the second innings of the Australian side, which took his tally to 200 wickets in just as many matches. This has not only made him the quickest Indian bowler to have accomplished this but also a record of the only bowler in Test cricket to have bowled with an average of 19.38.
Bumrah was consistently brilliant in the match; he got out four times with the ball in each innings of the match. This
feat puts him in the company of South African bowling great Dale Steyn, who is the only other bowler to grab four or more wickets, both in the first and second innings of a Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in this millennium.
Apart from setting the world record, Bumrah has taken 29 wickets in the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, breaking Kapil Dev’s record of 25 wickets in one series. He has become the first visiting bowler to take five wickets there in a match for 110 years, and now his haul of 57 wickets puts him at the top of the all-time list of bowlers to have played at this ground.
Bumrah is a beautiful example of unorthodox bowling, and his talent to bat in the important overs has gained him a lot of appreciation from cricket fans along with cricket analysts. They have applied him firmly amongst the most superior fast bowlers of modern world cricket.
