Washington D.C: Newly reelected U.S. President Donald Trump is assembling a high powered team for his second term, in a move that has both captivated his supporters and sceptics alike. His latest announcement has stirred significant interest: An all new department to government — the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will be headed by tech billionaire Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. As an ambitious Trump project this department is meant to overhaul government operations with a comparison to the ‘Manhattan Project’ that fueled the WWII effort.
DOGE is charged with a clear mandate: during the next two years, DOGE will streamline U.S. government operations by cutting bureaucracy, eliminating redundant red tape, cutting government spending, and restructuring public agencies. Trump’s aim is to present a leaner, more effective government, and he has set a symbolic deadline for the project: The 4th July 2026 will be the 250th anniversary of American Independence.
Trump, speaking of his goals, called the initiative a “new Manhattan Project” — a reference to the historic World War II research project that gave birth to the first atomic bombs. The nature and scale of his vision is so bold it’s akin to World War II with its wartime spirit of innovation and urgency. The original Manhattan Project that assembled luminaries like J. Robert Oppenheimer, Albert Einstein, and Enrico Fermi in pursuit of building those atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
From an Indian perspective, this newly created department would essentially be a Ministry of Good Governance, aimed at scrapping laws that have outlived their utility, making regulations easier, and making doing business easier. Other countries, such as India, have over the last decade undergone similar reforms to facilitate “Minimum Government, Maximum Governance or to cut down the bureaucratic red tape.
Selecting Musk and Ramaswamy for this important job suggests that Trump is serious about using private sector efficiency within the public sector. Musk has experience with disruptive technology and Ramaswamy is an entrepreneur with a knack for accelerometering, both of which reflect Trump’s vision of a modernised, lean government.
These are striking parallels with the original Manhattan Project. Known as the wartime initiative, the effort was directed by Major General Leslie Groves and physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, it brought together 130,000 personnel; cost $2 billion and led to the creation of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945. Where Trump’s government reform project isn’t of the same nature, the stakes are high; the initiative is supposed to usher in a new era of efficiency in America’s sprawling government machinery.
‘There is certainly a lot of intense debate right now surrounding Trump’s bold move, with critics questioning the scope and potential impact of DOGE.’ But the world is watching closely as preparations get underway to confirm whether this high stakes project becomes a turning point in U.S. governance reform.
