New Delhi: In a major setback for the West Indies cricket team just days before their ODI series against India, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a massive 25 percent reduction in the salaries of its centrally contracted players. The drastic cost-cutting measure comes as the Caribbean cricket board battles a severe financial crisis that has threatened its overall operational stability.

As part of the stringent restructuring, the contract period for domestic players has been reduced to just seven months, although international players will retain their standard 12-month agreements. Furthermore, CWI has entirely suspended two major regional competitions—the men’s Super50 tournament and the women’s T20 Blaze—to save on exorbitant travel and accommodation expenses.

Addressing the grim situation, CWI Chief Executive Chris Dehring stated that these tough decisions are vital for the board’s survival. “We appreciate the spirit of cooperation of the West Indies Players’ Association and the players who have demonstrated their understanding of the circumstances we all face,” Dehring said in an official statement. “While not ideal, it is a necessary step towards financial stability.”

Dehring highlighted the crippling logistical expenses that have drained the board’s cash reserves over the years. “Indeed, over eighty million US dollars has been spent by Cricket West Indies with domestic airlines over the past 15 years, without a reciprocating dollar of sponsorship from those beneficiaries. We must also deal with the immediate cash crunch brought about by years of bearing this burden and the crippling financial losses that emanate as a result,” he explained.

The financial overhaul is also a strict prerequisite for CWI to secure a crucial US$16 million (approximately INR 153 crore) financial relief loan from the International Cricket Council (ICC). To get the loan approved, the West Indies board is required to meet specific structural and financial targets.

This off-field turmoil unfolds right as the West Indies prepare to take on India in a three-match ODI series. The opening game is scheduled for Sunday, September 27, at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. This will be followed by the second ODI in Guwahati on September 30, and the final match in New Chandigarh on October 3. Fans and experts are now closely watching to see how this immense financial strain impacts the Caribbean side’s on-field performance against a formidable Indian squad.
