New Delhi: India has strongly criticised Pakistan over the ongoing unrest in Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir, accusing Islamabad of using fake news and misinformation to hide the situation on the ground. The response came amid reports of violent clashes, public protests and alleged human rights violations in the region.
The Ministry of External Affairs said Pakistan was trying to divert attention from the deteriorating situation in Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir by spreading false narratives. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India hopes the international community will hold Pakistan accountable for what he described as human rights violations in the region.
The remarks followed reports of protests and clashes in Rawalakot and other parts of Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Demonstrations in the region have been linked to public anger over governance, political representation, economic hardship and the treatment of local protesters by Pakistani authorities.
According to reports, several people have been killed and many others injured during the unrest. Security measures have also been tightened in parts of the region, with reports of internet restrictions, arrests and a crackdown on activists. The situation has drawn attention not only in South Asia but also among Kashmiri diaspora groups abroad.
India has consistently maintained that Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and that Pakistan is in illegal occupation of the territory. New Delhi’s latest statement has placed renewed focus on what it calls Pakistan’s failure to protect the rights and interests of people living in the region.
The unrest has also triggered political reactions outside the subcontinent. Reports say members of the Kashmiri diaspora have held protests in the United Kingdom, while some British lawmakers have raised concern over the violence and called for attention to the situation.
Pakistan, on the other hand, has often accused India of interference in matters related to the region. However, India has rejected such charges and argued that Pakistan should first address the grievances of people living under its control.
The latest exchange has once again brought the spotlight back on Pakistan occupied Kashmir, where local anger appears to be growing over political rights, economic pressures and alleged state action. With tensions continuing, India is expected to keep raising the issue at diplomatic forums while urging global scrutiny of Pakistan’s conduct.
