New Delhi: The Union government is working to get a handle on the increasing cases of fatty liver in India. Health Minister JP Nadda told Parliament that all states need to start screenings to find people who have it. To get the word out about the illness and push for better lifestyles, the government has also put out some advice.

What used to be called Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is now known as Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD). It’s linked to things like high cholesterol, diabetes, and being overweight. It happens when too much fat builds up in the liver.

To help stop and treat fatty liver, the government’s National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NPCDCS) says to eat well, work out often, keep a healthy weight, and cut back on sugar and fat. To make sure people get the care they need and are diagnosed early, states need to make sure doctors are following this advice.

Some Interesting Study Results

Minister Nadda talked about two big studies that show how big the problem is. The first one, which came out in 2025 in the Nature Scientific Reports Journal, looked at 345 IT workers in Hyderabad. It found that a lot of them, 84%, had fat buildup in their livers, and 34% had metabolic syndrome. This shows it’s a common issue in the IT world.
