New Delhi: In the rush of daily life, many people habitually delay visiting the washroom, thinking it’s harmless. However, medical experts warn that regularly holding urine can silently damage the urinary system and overall health.
Urine is the body’s way of flushing out excess water and toxic waste to maintain internal balance. Ignoring the urge to urinate disrupts this natural process, building pressure in the bladder and straining its muscles over time.
According to Dr L H Ghotekar, Director and HOD of the Medicine Department at Lady Hardinge Hospital, “Holding urine for a long time is not a healthy habit. The body should not be ignored when it signals the need to urinate. Going to the washroom on time is essential for the health of the bladder and kidneys. Frequent holding can increase the risk of infections and other problems, so it’s better to avoid such habits in daily routines.”
Key risks include:
Higher chance of urinary tract infections (UTIs): Stagnant urine allows bacteria to multiply.
Weakened bladder function: Repeated holding impairs the organ’s ability to empty completely.
Lower abdominal pain or discomfort: Increased pressure often leads to unease or pain.
Potential kidney issues: Long-term habit raises the risk of complications affecting the kidneys.
While occasional delays may not cause immediate harm, making it a routine can lead to recurring problems like burning sensations or frequent urges. Doctors advise heeding the body’s signals promptly. For unavoidable short delays, experts suggest relaxing, avoiding excess fluids, and distracting oneself briefly — but never turning it into a habit.
Seeing a doctor is essential to avoiding long-term harm if symptoms like pain, burning, or ongoing problems appear.
