Mumbai: Mumbai and its surrounding areas have been experiencing heavy rainfall for the past hour, accompanied by thunderstorms. Significant downpours have been reported in Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, the western suburbs, and Kurla, causing inconvenience to residents.
The sudden onset of rain has led to water accumulation in low-lying areas, prompting the temporary closure of the Andheri subway due to flooding. The Maharashtra government has issued a yellow alert for 29 districts, anticipating further heavy rainfall on 11th October. The meteorological department has forecast thunderstorms and rain for eastern suburbs of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Raigad districts, warning that showers may continue with gusty winds for the next two hours.
Affected Areas
Currently, the western suburbs of Mumbai, including Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Dahisar, Vile Parle, Santa Cruz, and Bandra, are experiencing heavy rainfall. If the downpour persists, there is a likelihood of waterlogging in low-lying areas across the western suburbs. Bhivandi city and taluka are also witnessing heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.
As the rains return, Bhivandi has seen a resurgence of heavy downpours, providing some relief from the heat for residents.
Different videos from the affected areas show waterlogging on Elphinstone Road in Mumbai, forcing pedestrians to navigate through the flooded streets. Vadala and Chunabhatti are also experiencing significant rainfall, with reports of lightning strikes accompanying the showers.
The sudden and intense rainfall has posed challenges, especially for two-wheeler riders, who are finding it difficult to traverse the wet and slippery roads.
As Mumbai braces for more rain, authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and prepared for potential disruptions in daily life. The combination of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms is expected to continue affecting the region throughout the day.
