Mumbai: The Indian film industry is famously driven by deep rooted superstitions, where producers regularly consult numerologists and alter spellings to secure box office success. However, an analysis of trade data reveals that a single, seemingly harmless word has consistently acted as a jinx for filmmakers. The word Karz, meaning debt, has turned out to be the unluckiest title in Bollywood history, delivering nine major box office bombs over a span of nearly three decades and pushing several production houses to the absolute brink of financial ruin.
The alleged curse of this title dates back to 1980 when veteran director Subhash Ghai released his musical thriller titled Karz, starring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Ambani, and Simi Garewal. Although the movie achieved cult status years later for its iconic soundtrack including tracks like Om Shanti Om, it initially flopped at the ticket windows, collecting under three crore rupees due to stiff competition from a parallel mega release. The unexpected failure heavily impacted lead actor Rishi Kapoor, who later admitted in his autobiography to slipping into a deep phase of clinical depression.
Despite the initial setback, filmmakers continued to use the ill fated word throughout the late eighties and nineties, resulting in a string of commercial disasters. Prominent multi starrers that failed to perform at the box office included Karz Tere Khoon Ka in 1988, Pyar Ka Karz in 1990, and the star studded Khoon Ka Karz in 1991, which featured top league actors like Vinod Khanna, Rajinikanth, and Sanjay Dutt. Even action star Sunny Deol could not break the streak in 2002 with Karz: The Burden of Truth, which was heavily panned by critics and tanked worldwide.
The final nail in the coffin arrived in 2008 with the release of Karzzzz, a high budget remake of the 1980 original starring Himesh Reshammiya and Urmila Matondkar. Made with an expansive budget of 24 crore rupees, the film wrapped up its theatrical run with a meager collection, leaving its distributors bankrupt. The disaster also impacted Matondkar’s career, effectively ending her run as a leading lady in mainstream Hindi cinema.
With nine consecutive failures tied directly to a single theme, trade analysts point out that the industry seems to have finally learned its lesson. No mainstream Bollywood producer has dared to announce a project featuring this title in recent years, proving that in the unpredictable world of commercial cinema, some debts are simply too expensive to pay.
