New Delhi: For many train travellers in India, the panic of leaving a physical train ticket at home while heading to the station is a familiar ordeal. Often resulting in a frantic rush or the fear of being penalized, this situation has now been simplified by a helpful provision within the Indian Railways rules.

Passengers who have purchased reserved tickets from railway counters and accidentally leave them behind can still continue their journey without facing undue harassment. According to the existing guidelines, the absence of the physical ticket does not automatically terminate a traveller’s right to complete their journey, provided the authenticity of the booking can be verified.

If a passenger realizes mid journey or upon boarding that they have forgotten their physical ticket, they should immediately inform the Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) on board. The passenger can then request a family member or an authorized representative to take the original ticket to the station master at their boarding station.

Once the original ticket is presented, the station master will verify the details and send an official communication to the relevant railway authorities on the train. This process allows the TTE to confirm the passenger’s booking status, thereby enabling them to continue their journey in accordance with railway regulations.

It is important to note that this facility is strictly applicable to passengers who have purchased paper tickets from Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. The rule does not extend to e tickets booked through the IRCTC website or mobile application. E tickets are verified digitally, and separate, well established protocols are already in place for such bookings.

This provision serves as a significant relief for those who have legitimately purchased their tickets but may have misplaced them or left them behind in a hurry. By bridging the gap between accidental human error and official verification, Indian Railways ensures that genuine passengers are not inconvenienced during their travel.
