New Delhi: India’s growing stray dog crisis has returned to the national spotlight after fresh data showed a sharp year-on-year rise in dog bite cases across the country.
According to Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme data cited in the report, India recorded 21,89,909 dog bite cases in 2022, which rose to 30,52,521 in 2023 and further climbed to 37,15,713 in 2024. In January 2025 alone, 4,29,664 cases were reported. The report also cited a SAGE journal reference stating that dog bite incidents crossed 48.47 lakh in 2025.
The issue gained urgency after the Supreme Court, on Tuesday, May 19, asked state governments to strengthen and effectively implement the Animal Welfare Board of India framework and rules. The court also directed authorities to ensure adequate availability of anti-rabies medicines and vaccines. It further said that areas facing a serious stray dog problem should use expert help to control the situation.
State-wise data shows Maharashtra recorded the highest number of dog bite cases in 2024 with 4,85,345 incidents, followed by Tamil Nadu with 4,80,427, Gujarat with 3,92,837 and Karnataka with 3,61,494. Odisha also saw a major rise, from 65,396 cases in 2022 to 1,66,792 in 2024, with 24,478 cases reported in January 2025 alone.
Health experts have warned that even a minor scratch from a dog should not be ignored. A timely anti-rabies vaccine can be life-saving, while delay in treatment may prove dangerous. With children among the most vulnerable, authorities have urged people to stay alert around stray dogs and seek immediate medical care after any bite or scratch.
