Bhopal: If the failing health infrastructure in the country was not reason enough for worry, here’s comes a latest incident of gross negligence by a senior doctor who was removed for his alleged amorous behaviour. In a video that has gone viral on social media, the 49-year-old Ujjain district hospital civil surgeon was purportedly caught kissing a woman, believed to be nurse, inside an operation theater of all places.
It remain unclear whether he was midst of performing a surgery but his act was in clear violation of Medical Council of India guidelines and the standard ethics expected of a senior surgeon when on duty in the hospital. The incident has created a flutter in the medical fraternity. The district administration was quick to act following the surfacing of the video.
The doctor has been removed from his post for the “behaviour unbecoming of an officer”, district collector Shashank Mishra told news agency PTI. Currently, the doctor has not shown up at the hospital after the video surfaced and have been on a leave.
According to sources, the woman seen in the video is a nurse with the district hospital while the operation theatre is believed to be the one in the hospital.
“I have removed him from the post of civil surgeon of the district hospital,” Mishra told PTI, adding that he has also issued a notice seeking the senior doctor’s explanation.
District Chief Medical and Health Officer (DCMHO) Dr Mohan Malviya said Divisional Commissioner is expected to order an enquiry into the incident.
Such inappropriate acts and negligence during duty are, however, not uncommon in hospitals in India. Last week, news surfaced of how a male nurse in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur had botched up a delivery procedure, which separated the baby’s body from the head. The nurse performed the delivery as the doctor was reportedly unavailable.
Dr BL Bunkar, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Jaisalmer said that the doctor on duty, who was not called for the delivery, has been removed and put on APO (awaiting posting orders). He will submit the report in the case within a week.
