New Delhi: A string of controversies is being preceded by the voting in Delhi on Wednesday to spice up the atmosphere. Gaurav, who works in Chief Minister Atishi’s office, was held with ₹5 lakh cash in Girikhand Nagar. Gaurav works in the CM’s office, they said, and they asked what amount of money is coming from where to where.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The FIR, which was based on a complaint filed by Shahabad resident Jagmohan Manchanda, was registered on charges under sections 192, 196(1), 197(1), 248(a) and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The statement — that the Haryana government poisoned water from the Yamuna River, which is supplied to Delhi — has whipped up a storm, with Kejriwal accusing the Haryana government of wilfully harming people.
Highlights of the FIR Registered Against Kejriwal:
Religious Sentiments and Provocation: According to the complaint, Kejriwal’s statement provoked two states to incite religious sentiments.
Kejriwal said that the Haryana government had poisoned the water being supplied from the Yamuna River to Delhi, which would have resulted in a “mass genocide” if the Delhi Jal Board engineers had not detected it.
Political Reaction: The BJP and Congress both slammed Kejriwal for making serious and inflammatory statements without any proof, which can create horror and social tension.
Earlier, the Election Commission had also asked Kejriwal to produce proof for his allegations. Nayab Singh Saini, Haryana Chief Minister, alleged that Kejriwal indulged in false propaganda to hide his failures, adding that the water provided to Delhi was the same as that used by top government officials.
Impact on Delhi elections: The issue of Yamuna water has also become a polemic point in the Delhi elections, with various political leaders of both Delhi and Haryana commenting on it.
With polls around the corner in the capital, these controversies are bound to affect the public perception vote. When results are declared on February 8, they will show whether the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) can hold on to its grip or whether the BJP and Congress can make serious inroads.
