CRPF Trooper Killed in Manipur Militant Attack, One Policeman Injured

Jiribam, Manipur: In a tragic incident, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper was killed, and a policeman injured in an attack by militants in Mongpung village, Jiribam district, on Sunday. The deceased trooper has been identified as Ajay Kumar Jha, 43, from Bihar.

According to police officials, Ajay Kumar Jha sustained a fatal bullet injury to his head and was declared brought dead at the hospital. The injured policeman, who remains unnamed, is currently undergoing treatment and is reported to be out of danger.

Governor Anusuiya Uikey expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending her heartfelt condolences to the family of the slain trooper. In a statement, she praised the bravery and dedication of Ajay Kumar Jha and condemned the “heinous act of violence,” emphasising that such acts would not be tolerated in Manipur. She reiterated the state’s commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining peace and security.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also condemned the attack, praying for the speedy recovery of the injured policeman. He highlighted the supreme sacrifice made by the CRPF trooper, asserting that it would not go in vain. The armed group responsible for the attack is suspected to be a Kuki militant group.

In response to the attack, additional security forces were deployed in Mongpung. Officials reported that a vehicle belonging to the security personnel was damaged during the gunfight.

Meanwhile, Kuki Impi Manipur (KIM), the apex body representing the Kuki community in the state, condemned the violence and described it as a state-sponsored attack. Since May last year, Manipur has been marred by ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, resulting in over 200 deaths.

The situation remains tense, and authorities are taking steps to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
